I Put Biz's 80% Claim to the Test

It says it improves cleaning by up to 80%. I ran the numbers on a super average detergent to find out.

Biz ↗ claims to improve cleaning performance by up to 80%, which is quite the claim to make. It's also a specific one, and I don't see that often. Most products just say things like “works on 100% of common stains,” which you can't really check. A number is something I can test, so I tested it.

How I tested it

For this test I used a super average detergent: Amazon's liquid, which scored a 48.6 in my testing. Then I ran the same test again with Biz powder added to the wash. If Biz really adds 80%, the score should jump from 48.6 to 87.5.

It came in at 83.8. That's close enough to call the claim legit, and it's impressive for a booster. Biz turned an inexpensive, average product into an elite one.

I'm going to blame the gap between 83.8 and 87.5 on my dose. Biz recommends a half cup, which felt like a lot, so I dropped it down to a quarter cup. That's still quite a bit of product, and I got excellent results with it.

Why it works so well

Biz includes two of the most important cleaning ingredients in modern laundry, a really lovely enzyme blend and powdered oxygen bleach (also known as color-safe bleach), and they do different jobs. The enzymes break down the root cause of the stain, and the oxygen bleach attacks the color and corrects it. It's the same order I follow as a dry cleaner with any stain: deal with what caused it first, then fix the color. There's more on that in my oxygen bleach testing.

What I actually appreciate about Biz is that it stays in its lane.

Why I like it

I appreciate when a product doesn't overpromise. Biz doesn't try to be a detergent, and it doesn't pretend to be one. It's an extremely helpful booster, and you don't necessarily need it for every load, but it's a solid thing to have on hand.

Where it fits in my routine

If you feel like you've got the basics down and want to level up, a powdered booster is the next thing to add, and Biz is one of the ones I'd point you to, along with OxiClean, washing soda and borax.

It also has a spot in two of my longer routines. When I'm rescuing a white tee whose old body oil stains have yellowed, I wash it with OxiClean White Revive along with an enzymatic powdered booster like Biz, a high quality detergent and an acidic rinse, in hot water to activate all of that bleach. And when I'm stripping laundry, a powdered booster with enzymes and oxygen bleach goes in the drum along with the borax and washing soda.

One note before you buy

Skin contact with powdered enzymes can be quite irritating. If you're a sensitive skin person, please be mindful of that when you measure it out.

I didn't test Biz's other uses, because that felt a bit out of my comfort zone, so everything here is about what it does in the laundry room. There, I think it's an excellent product with a lot of value. Good work, Biz.
